Renowned Islamic scholar and Secretary General of the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa Ml Ebrahim Bham says there is nothing wrong with progress and technology in Islam.

Ml Bham was rendering the Jumu’ah lecture at Masjide Heera in Dewbury last week.

While there have been misconceptions about the permissibility and use of technology in Islam, it’s reported that Nabi Muhammad (SAW) was not averse to reaping the benefits of new ideas without considering whether it could cause harm to the Muslim Ummah.

Ml Bham says Islam did not in any way prevent Muslims from technology, modernity and progress and the ability to utilise it.

“What Islam has always said, that whenever anything new has come in Islam, we always looked at the benefit and we always looked at the harms. If you did not adopt this, then you would not have been able to move from the Stone Age to the atomic age, you would not have been able to move from the camel to the cars and to the aeroplanes. If you did not adopt this, you would not have been able to from the candles to the bulbs. But Islam didn’t tell us not to do that.”

Speaking on social media, Ml Bham says the various platforms has its benefits.

“You can keep in contact with people halfway across the globe, but while doing that sometime you cut yourself off the person who is sitting right in front of you. So we are blessed and sometimes we are cursed with regards to it.”

Ml Bham says the intention of a person using technology and social media is very important as it can it be used to access Islamic information, scholarly lectures and research while at the same time it can also be used for other purposes which contradicts the teaching and tenets of Islam.
