The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) says a masjid in Cape Town which is in existence for the past twenty years will continue the call of athan after an agreement was reached with the city.
This comes after a noise abatement notice was issued to Masjid-us-Saliheen on 4 December by a resident of Bayview in Strandfontein that the athan was a “noise nuisance”, and must be discontinued.
It stated the masjid’s loudspeaker was in contravention of the Noise Control Regulation.
The MJC’s Sheikh Riyaad Fataar says after meeting with city officials, it was agreed that a noise management plan be implement for the masjid.
“The city has agreed they will send out their own people and that there will be complete agreement as to how the level of the athan is. The city health department has indicated that they have at no stage asked for the athan to be discontinued and they would never ask for the athan to be discontinued.”
Sheikh Fataar says the complaint was an isolated incident and that the bond among the various religious groups is very close knit.
“We have seen how the Christian community have come out, the CPF has come out, the Christian church down the road has come out in defence of the masjid and in defence of the athan and saying that they are totally opposed to the complainant, there is no noise disturbance or no noise nuisance.”
Shiekh Fataar says the South African Muslim community is amazing and should continue to uphold the deen of Islam to the highest standards as propagated by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)
