Former deputy finance minister Mcebisi Jonas has told Radio Islam his new book “After Dawn: Hope after State Capture” was inspired by the apparent corruption and decline of South Africa.

In the book Jonas writes, South Africa needs to create new national obsessions around which stakeholders can cohere and push difficult policy decisions that will break our low-growth, high-inequality trap.

The former deputy finance minister blew the whistle on State Capture after turning down a bribe of R600-million from the Gupta brothers to take on the position of finance minister in October 2015.

Jonas says the idea for the book started as far back as 2008.

“The whole state capture thing strengthened the idea that actually you have a twin problem. One problem of course is the obvious one corruption and state capture. But the other problem we have is the lack of big ideas about where we supposed to go as a country and sitting between them is the absence of leadership.”

Speaking about the ANC in his book, Jonas says the party is constrained by its own political dynamics.

“There are too many factions sometimes promoting different agendas and there’s no coherence. That’s what constrains the ANC is has to address that if it is to move forward.”

Jonas says there has been positive reaction to the book which focuses on the analysis of the country.
