The mayor of Hebron in Palestine where Prophet Ibrahim (PBUH) is buried has thanked South Africans for their hospitality.
Tayseer Abu Sneineh is currently visiting the country to create awareness about the Palestinian struggle.
In a wide ranging interview with Radio Islam and speaking in Arabic, Abu Sneineh touched on a number of challenges and issues the people of Hebron and Palestine endure including the various security checkpoints, the division of land, water and other amenities among others.
Speaking about Masjid-ul-Khalil in Hebron, Abu Sneineh says even this place of worship has not been spared.
“There was an attack in 1994 at the masjid where there was an attack on the musallee’s and from that point onwards, the masjid has been divided and the fact is that it’s difficult for Muslims to get into the masjid without being checked at the checkpoint.”
Abu Sneineh has expressed his gratitude to the people of South Africa for their stance on the Palestinian issue reflecting on the late President Nelson Mandela’s word’s that “South Africa will not be free until Palestine is free.”
