A community activist says the Mayfair area is experiencing a number of issues with service delivery, particularly with the supply and maintenance of electricity infrastructure.

Aziz Ali and Mayfair resident Mumtaz Ally Chotia were speaking during the community segment programme on Radio Islam about the issues plaguing Mayfair.

Ali narrated an incident about a City Power technician who allegedly ripped out an underground electricity cable six weeks ago while apparently drunk.

“The technician was drunk, there are witnesses to that. But this is just not an isolated incident in the Mayfair area. If you just driver around and you look at the substations, electrical poles, you’ll see that the cabling and the wires are just left, the substation boxed are open.”

Chotia says residents expect better service delivery from the City of Johannesburg.

“From our perspective, we bought these houses as our forever homes and not expecting the Slovo informal settlement to come and build homes or shacks and stealing electricity. So we’ve been having issues, at least eight houses in our area or in our block didn’t have electricity for eight days.”

Chotia and Ali have both expressed concerns about the lack of effective service delivery in the Mayfair area.

Earlier this month, newly elected Johannesburg Mayor Jolidee Matongo told Radio Islam that his top priorities will be stabilizing the finances of the city, job creation, the acceleration of basic service delivery to residents and the illegal occupation of land among other problems.
