[LISTEN] Mashaba Defends Tweet Comparing Trump to Ramaphosa

August 14, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 14-08-2018

Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba has told Radio Islam that while he agrees that US President Donald Trump is a well-known bigot, sexist, fascist, Islamophobe and racist, and has more respect for South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, the government is in crisis.

Mashaba has come under fire for comparing Trump to Ramaphosa on Twitter.

Mashaba shared a picture “Judge for yourself” listing Trump’s “success” as “reduced taxes”, “stricter immigration control” and “economic growth” alongside Ramaphosa’s “failure” which includes “increased taxes”, “calling for open African borders” and “economic decline”.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Mashaba defended the tweet comparing Trump to Ramaphosa saying it was not about the US President, but rather about the successes of the US government under Trump.

“Everything that you said about Trump, its exactly that and I think I have no sympathy. If you look at the two gentlemen, I think I have much more respect for Cyril. But at the same time when some sent me that, look at the bottom in terms of successes of the American government and South Africa, we are sitting with a crisis.”

Mashaba has since deleted the tweet.
