Gauteng MPL and candidate for leadership of the Democratic Alliance (DA) Makashule Gana has told Radio Islam the party has been damaged and he wants to the restore the credibility of the official opposition.
The DA is expected to elect an interim leader on 17 November following the resignation of Mmusi Maimane.
The party will then elect a new permanent leader at a congress in April next year.
When nominations closed last week three people had thrown their hats in the ring for the position.
These include new appointed parliamentary leader John Steenhuisen, Gauteng MPL Makashule Gana and Western Cape provincial leader and MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela.
Gana says there needs to be a shift the DA’s stance in the country’s political arena.
“We need to occupy the political centre of South Africa and that means that we have to be unapologetic in dealing with some of the issues that happened in this country. So my candidature is about justice, it’s about restoring the dignity of people and also rebuilding the DA imange.”
Gana says he is not concerned by the exodus of a number of black people from the party as the last 17 years in the party has prepared him to deal with the pressure that comes with the leadership position.
