The Democratic Alliance (DA) says it is fully behind it’s leader Mmusi Maimane, despite a poor performance at the polls.
Divisions within the party over the future of Maimane resurfaced as the DA’s performance in the 2019 elections resulted in less votes than the previous elections.
Maimane is the first DA leader to fail to grow the party at the polls since 1999.
Speaking to Radio Islam at the Tshwane Results Operation Centre (Roc), the DA’s James Selfe says Maimane is safe for now.
“Mr Maimane was elected by the federal congress last year. His term of office extends to 2021. I am not aware of anybody who seriously questions his leadership. I am sure that the party is one hundred percent behind him.”
Speaking to journalists at the Roc, Maimane said the 2019 general election was “not an internal DA popularity contest” and that he was confident he would remain DA leader until the party’s next national congress in 2021.
