Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says the province is expecting a good matriculation pass despite the COVID-19 pandemic, which has drastically affected the academic year.

Lesufi was speaking at a Gauteng government briefing on Tuesday.

The MEC outlined his portfolios goals, which is part of the implementation of the Growing Gauteng Together 2030 (GGT2030) programme of action.

Lesufi says he believes the province’s matriculants will perform well in their final exams in spite of the disruptions caused to the academic year by the coronavirus pandemic.

“I know everyone will ask us what is our expectation in terms of matric pass, we are expecting a good pass. Our expectation for a matric pass is a good pass. Out of that good pass, the province will remain one of the best performing provinces in our country.”

Lesufi had harsh words for those who vandalise and burn down schools during protests which affects the department in providing placement for learners.

“In terms of schools that were burnt down by people who don’t know, we started a process of fixing those schools. But there is a school in Ekurhuleni, I want to put it on record, parents there will see it to finish, we are not going to build that school. They burnt it down, it will be a museum. Every time they see that school, they will see this is where we burnt the school. I am not going to fix it.”

More than one million candidates are sitting for their final exams this year and the Basic Education Department says that it is confident that they will do well.
