The K-Way Institute says 2021 is heading to record the worst maths and science results in the history of South Africa’s schooling academic year.
K-Ways Mohammad Khota was speaking to Radio Islam about the urgent intervention required to up the maths marks after learners were producing less than 30% in their maths exams.
The COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on schooling with a number of disruptions to the academic year.
Khota says due to the first Coronavirus lockdown last year, a major gap emerged in maths among learners in Grade 11 and 12.
“This filters right down, right through to grade six. Schools couldn’t retain learners and they managed to push the learners through into 2021. Come this year and with the second lockdown, the teachers at school or the educators don’t have the capacity, they don’t have the time, they don’t have the resources to go back to last years work. The way it’s looking is that 2021 is heading for the worst maths results, in facts maths and science in the history of this country.”
Khota says online teaching has not been successful.
“Generally no. The reason why we are saying that is because with the number of learners that come to our institute after being taught online from schools, we found that the learners are at this juncture of the year only 30% capable of writing their final exams.”
Khota says they have various initiatives to assist schools, online teaching, live contact sessions and workshops to gear learners for their exams.
