Joburg Metro Police Department Chief David Tembe says the latest eruption of violence in the Joburg CBD is pure criminality.

Tembe confirmed to Radio Islam that a second person had been killed during clashes in the city on Sunday.

He says the latest victim was shot in Malvern while another person was stabbed earlier in Hillbrow.

It’s understood the unrest flared up again after residents from hostels marched to a local park where they were addressed by former IFP President Mangosuthu Buthelezi about the recent xenophobic attacks.

Areas including Malvern, Jeppe and Hillbow were under lockdown for hours.

Tembe says several cars and buildings have been set alight overnight while businesses have been looted.

“It’s an act of criminality because you can’t go around looting goods and breaking shops and burning tyres, burning cars. That’s criminality.”

Tembe says while the city calm at the moment, they are monitoring the situation.
