With just a week left before the blessed month of Ramadan begins, the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa has urged Muslims to be careful of bogus money collectors who use the month to request donations with fake or fraudulent letters.

The Jamiat, which has been serving the community in the Gauteng regions, provides various services like taalim, welfare and social activities including the need to regulate collection of money from donors.

The Jamiat says it issues letters to collectors for the benefit of the donor community and for the organization and institution for which the document has been issued.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Jamiat’s Ml Dawood Cassim says while it issues letters to collectors, there are fake and fraudulent documents in circulation which are being used by bogus collectors.

“We vociferously tell the donor community that be vigilant. If you see a letter and if you do not verify that letter, than you can use your prerogative in refusing the person any donation.”

Ml Cassim says there are many ways to verify if a letter is authentic or fake including using technology by means of their website.

“If you go onto our website at Jamiatsa.org, on the home page there is a button that says verify collection letter. If you click onto the button, it will bring you onto a page where you punch in the reference number of that letter and the ID number of the collector. If everything is matching, it will pop up whether it’s an authentic on inauthentic letter”

Ml Cassim says the letters issued by the Jamiat also have salient features including a printed reference number, the name and identity number of the collector, a gold embossed seal with an Arabic inscription and expiry dates amongst others which sets it apart from fraudulent letters.
