The Jamiatul Ulama South Africa (JUSA) has advised the Muslim community to take the adjusted level three protocols seriously amid the grim increase of COVID-19 infections in the country.

On Monday, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the country will be moving to the adjusted level three of the Coronavirus lockdown to stop the spread of the virus.

Addressing a briefing on the new level three lockdown regulations on Tuesday, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said all faith-based gatherings are not allowed for two weeks.

Jusa says it has noted with concern the inconsistent treatment of religious gatherings while restaurants, casinos and cinemas would remain operational.

Secretary General Ml Ebrahim Bham says Jusa will engage authorities on these inconsistencies.

“Given this ambiguity on the regulations, we call upon the community to keep the masaajid open while adhering to the applicable regulations on maximum limit of congregants and other necessary protocols.”

Meanwhile, the Health Department on Tuesday announced that the number of COVID-19 infections in the country had risen to 1,021,451 an increase of 9,580 cases while 27,568 people have died from the virus since the start of the outbreak.
