The Jamiatul Ulama South Africa together with the Gift of the Givers has constructed and handed over about forty toilets to about five schools in the Bergville area in KwaZulu-Natal.
Jamiat SA says there was a need for proper and hygienic toilets following a number of incidents in which pupils were injured and even lost their lives while using the old pit facilities.
The organisation’s Ml Obeidullah Bhoja says the new facilities are safer and more hygenic.
Ml Bhoja says the average costs for the toilets per school is about seventy thousand rand.
“We’ve dug fresh toilets whereby there’s a proper toilet that is sealed, that has a proper seating, so that when the learner go and relieve themselves, there is no fear of life and is a dignified way to go an relieve oneself.”
Ml Bhoja says the education department assesses which schools are in desperate need for new toilet facilities.
“Many schools in the region, as funds come in the project is taken on and the schools are then given an opportunity.”
Ml Bhoja says anyone willing to contribute to the initiative can contact the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa.
