The Jamiatul Ulama South Africa’s burial services says the organization has been handling a high number of mayyits due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Muslim Stats SA, more than 2,780 Muslim fatalities have so far been recorded since the outbreak of the pandemic.

With the country currently in the third wave, during the month of June lone more than seventy people have so far succumbed to the virus.

Speaking to Radio Islam, the Jamiat burial services Ebrahim Budden says they have received a lot of help with the COVID-19 burials from Saaberie Chishty Society.

Budden says a number of people including volunteers have dedicated their time, putting their lives at risk to assist with a Muslim burial.

“We are doing a number of COVID mayyits. In all organisations same as with the COVID, there is an ameer and at the moment we follow the leadership of Abu Sayed. When we have a COVID mayyit they have the volunteers that comes out and assist with the ghusal. They have been assigned to do the ghusal for us.”

Budden says despite the conspiracy theories, the Coronavirus is real and not fake news.

“People take it as a joke, but it’s not. We have to follow the protocols and procedures. We get some people that are very adamant and do their own things. We don’t think it is fair on the organization itself because we go through a lot of flak from the Health Department. It is important for us to understand the social distancing is important, the PPE is important, the method of handling the deceased is important and that’s the way it should be.’

Budden has urged family members of the deceased to comply with protocols when attending a janaza as health officials monitor the process and any violations of the rules may result in the suspension of the burial organisations licences and permits including the possibility of shutting the organization down.
