A Palestinian journalist has told Radio Islam Israeli forces were specifically targeting a freelance Palestinian photojournalist before shooting him.

Thirty-two-year-old Muath Amarneh was hit with a bullet in his left eye while filming the clashes between Palestinian youth and Israeli border police in the Hebron-area town of Surif on Friday.

Amarneh was wearing a press vest and helmet surrounded by other journalists who were covering the protests.

Journalist Khaled Amayreh says Israeli forces wanted to stop Amarneh from sharing the reality of Isrfaeli aggression against Palestinians.

“They don’t like the message they convey to the rest of the world about Israeli aggression. Israel routinely carries out crimes against humanity and other war crimes against the Palestinians, this is the truth.”

Amayreh says Israeli forces have an established tactic to target Palestinian reporters, especially cameraman because the journalists stories harm and tarnish the image of Israel.

“Israel doesn’t like that so they try to eliminate and kill people who really so that. This is not the last time or this is not the first time they do it and this is not going to be the last time. This is an outstanding policy carried out by Israel irrespective of which government is in power.”

Amayreh says while the voices that condemn Israel around the world are very few, Amarneh’s colleagues in a symbolic gesture of solidarity with him covered their right eyes to show they will not be silenced about the aggression and atrocities committed by Israel against Palestinians.
