While Muslims always pay particular attention to whether their food is permissible to consume or halaal, physical appearance, especially the hair should also be confined to the requirements as set out in the teachings of Islam.

Many youth of today and even other Muslims have adopted hairstyles that mimic sports stars, actors and celebrities amongst others.

While it may be the latest trend, questions have been raised about whether modern haircuts or hairstyles are halaal?

Radio Islam’s Mufti Zubair Bayat answering a listeners question on the weekly Q & A programme on Radio Islam explains that Islam has given clear guidelines when it comes to cutting hair.

“The fundamental ruling is that that the hair should be cut one length. All round the hair should be cut one length. You shouldn’t have different lengths of hair, where for example some parts are kept longer, others are kept shorter, especially the type of contemporary hairstyles we are seeing in today’s times. These would definitely fall under the prohibition.”

Mufti Bayat says Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) prohibited qa’za which is to let the hair grow unevenly or to shave certain parts of the hair while leaving others areas unshaved.

The Q & A programme airs on Monday from 8pm to 10pm on Radio Islam.
