Democratic Alliance (DA) spokesperson for Health in the KwaZulu-Natal Dr Rishigen Viranna says the health portfolio committee wants a full analysis report to see if the province is ready for the third wave of the Coronavirus.
The KZN Health Department believes all measures are in place to prevent the province from being overwhelmed by the third wave of COVID-19 infections.
Head of department Dr Sandile Tshabalala told The Mercury that they were very concerned about the growing number of infections
Speaking to Radio Islam, Viranna says they were told the province is ready, but they want the analysis report.
“WE take what the HOD said with a pinch of salt. We are waiting to see that actual analysis and the remedial actions that they have put in place for the third wave before we can be fully confident that KwaZulu-Natal is ready.”
Viranna, has warned Health MEC, Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu, of potential legal action following numerous occasions where MPL’s have been blocked from conducting oversight inspections of healthcare facilities.
“At this stage it seem like it is only DA members and it didn’t just start with myself. There were similar incidents with my colleague Dr. Imran Keeka who was also denied access to numerous health facilities when he was shadow minister as well.”
Viranna also says the health portfolio committee is also concerned about the slow pace of the vaccine rollout, adding that they want the Health Department to work very closely with the private sector to make sure more vaccine sites are opened.
