Questions have been raised about the alleged collapsing of Lenasia’s infrastructure plunging the suburb into a myriad of problems that require immediate attention.

Lenasia residents say they are facing a slew of problems with land invasions and a collapsing infrastructure on top of the list.

Earlier this year, the Democratic Alliance (DA) called for the Gauteng Provincial Government to accelerate the process in making sure that Lenasia residents have access to dignified housing and reliable services following a spate of protests in the area.

However the situation remains unchanged.

Speaking to Radio Islam, DA Councilor Kishore Badal says while they have a member from roads and transport on their ward committee that deals with the pothole plague in the area, the land invasion issue has been a challenge.

“Land invasion, we’ve been battling with it for the last couple of years ever since the Univille issue. We have been working on this technically on a daily basis and there are number of challenges that we have.”

Badal says Lenasia is demarcated into several wards run under a coalition government and that the ward councilor for a particular ward must be held accountable by residents to provide services and address problems.

“In terms of the individual ward, each ward has got a ward councilor, and that ward councilor is responsible for representing the interests of that particular community within his ward. So when there’s issues and there’s problems there, there are process, there are officials that deals with it.”

Badal says there is very little support from the provincial government to assist communities like Lenasia, Lenasia South, Zakariyya Park, Ennerdale and Eldorado Park.
