A recruitment expert has told Radio Islam that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is quite diligent when it comes to the recruitment process.

With matrics now having completed their basic education, those who will not be attending a tertiary institution may seek employment in an already saturated job market.

On Tuesday, Statistics South Africa announced that the country’s unemployment rate had increased to 32.5% in the fourth quarter of 2020 compared to the third quarter.

With thousands looking for jobs, there have been reports that most companies in Europe are using computer algorithms to sort out hundreds of curriculum vitae’s that are received, calling it the fast-growing world of AI Recruitment.

Others have come forward to even say that job interviews are done using online games to help assess who should go through the next round.

Asmaa Dinat says while there should not be a reliance on AI for recruiting people, it is a good first step in the interview process.

“It kind of eliminates any human bias and it usually helps large organisations screen a lot of CV’s. So say for example, if your receive two or three hundred CV’s per month even per week for some of the larger companies it eliminates people who have applied, who are not suitable for the job.”

Dinat explained how the AI process works in the recruitment process.

“The program runs on an algorithm which is kind of set up to pick up key words when the person is giving their video interview. So you would answer a set of three pre-determined questions and the software will pick up on your answers if you have given the correct answer.”

Dinat says there are difference software packages including those that screen CV’s, live or pre-recorded video interviews among other means in the recruitment process adding that it is currently being used in Africa including South Africa.
