The India Palestinian Solidarity Forum says it is not surprised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Indian government to vote in support of Israel at the United Nations Economic and Social Council to deny observer status to a Palestinian human rights organization called Shahed’.

This is the first time India has taken a step back from its decades-old position on the two-state theory under which New Delhi sees both Israel and Palestine as separate and independent countries.

The vote, which took place on 6 June at the UN, saw countries such as US, France, Germany, India, Japan, UK, South Korea and Canada polling in favour of Israel, while China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and some others voted in favour of the Palestine body.

Speaking to Radio Islam, founder and general secretary of the India Palestinian Solidarity Forum Feroze Mithiborwala says they are aghast the Modi’s government could stoop so low and prevent a human rights organisation from joining the UN.

“I am ashamed as an Indian to see the direction in which this government of Modi is going. Essentially this is not about India, this is about the fact that there is a right-wing dominated India, a right-wing majority Hindustan government that since its inception in the Hindu social organization called the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, which in its roots have been anti-Muslim, which in its roots have been anti Palestinian and has always been pro-Israel.”

The proposal made by ‘Shahed’ to obtain observer status in the UN got rejected by a 28-14 vote.
