Hundreds of Lenasia residents, civil society and sporting bodies are expected to protest over the neglect and failure by the city of Johannesburg to upgrade the sporting facilities in Lenasia on Saturday.
The Abu Bakr Asvat Institute says various sporting grounds in an around the suburb and in particular Tech Grounds have been left in a terrible state for more than 20 years.
According to sporting organisations in Lenasia, while the City of Johannesburg had issued a tender to upgrade the Tech Ground facility at a cost of approximately 4.2 million rand allegedly for the project, the scope of work was not agreed to by any of the stakeholders.
The Abu Bakr Asvat Institute’s Ali Osmany says the city of Johannesburg needs be held accountable.
“We cannot be subjected to be shoved around from pillar to post, meeting ineffectual officials who cannot give us a direct answer and the responsibility sits directly with the mayor of Johannesburg and the MEC for sports in Gauteng.”
The protest is expected to take place at the corner of Rose Avenue and Gemsbok Street from 11 o clock.
