Huawei has officially launched the P30 Series smartphone at a glittering event at the Kyalami International Convention Centre in Johannesburg.

The new P30 Series re-writes the rules with devices that boast improved specifications, enhanced designs, and unprecedented camera systems.

Huawei has continued its partnership with camera maker Leica to deliver a high-performance camera system on a smartphone, which rivals that of entry-level DSLR cameras in many respects.

It comprises four lenses and a software and processing suite, which takes the device’s photos to a level possibly unrivaled by the company’s major competitors.

The P30 Pro has a 40MP main camera, a 20MP ultra-wide angle camera, a 8MP telephoto camera and the new Huawei Time-of-Flight (TOF) camera. The front camera packs a whopping 32MP.

Other Major changes include in-screen optical fingerprint sensors, with the P30 Pro getting support for wireless charging.

The P30 Pro also supports 40W fast wireless charging in addition to wireless quick charge and reverse wireless charging functionality.

The dew drop display is almost bezel-less, with Huawei removing the front speaker grill in favour of a sound-on display solution which vibrates the smartphone’s screen to produce audio.

The P30 range comprises the P30 and P30 Pro smartphones, along with the mid-range P30 Lite which offers high-end features in a more affordable package.

On the night, Huawei also launched the MateBook 13 notebook, the Mate M5Lite tablet, a new series of GT smartwatches, a mini-bluetooth speaker, FreeLace headphones and smart eyewear which it says will be available later in the year.

Huawei also launched its online store where customers can purchase various products.

The 6.1-inch P30 and 6.47-inch P30 Pro is available in classic black and three new gradient finishes—Amber Sunrise, Breathing Crystal and Aurora, created with a new high-yield inkjet process that Huawei pioneered.

Pricing for the P30 Series starts at R 13,999 for the P30, R 18,999 for the P30 Pro and R 5,999 for the P30 Lite.
