Huawei has officially launched the Huawei Mate 10 Pro and Porsche Design Huawei Mate 10 following a global launch in what it says is the world’s first handset designed with a Neural Network Processing Unit.

The breakthrough AI devices with dual 4G sim which feature the Kirin 970 chipset and an all-new, simplified EMUI 8.0 based on Android™ 8.0 were launched in Cape Town on Monday.

Offline AI, thanks to the Kirin processor means the Huawei Mate10 Pro can do things like translate text even without internet connectivity.

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro and Porsche Design Huawei Mate 10 both feature a 6-inch screen with an 18:9 FHD+ OLED display, barely there-bezel and HDR10 to support vivid colours.

It features the world’s largest dual speedy f1.6 aperture Leica camera lenses that no one else has managed in a smartphone. Huawei says its real-time object recognition means the cameras on the Huawei Mate10 Pro can adjust settings based on the subject and is able to recognise up to 13 different type of objects, adjusting the settings to take better pics.

The devices also have a 3D glass body, a rear fingerprint sensor and are symmetrically curved on all four sides for an ergonomic hold and are IP67 water and dust resistant.

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro and Porsche Design Huawei Mate 10 feature a SuperCharge and 4000 mAh battery with AI-powered battery management, which understands user behaviour and intelligently allocates resources to maximize battery life.

Additionally, Huawei SuperCharge is the world’s first fast-charging technology to receive TÜV Fast-Charge Safety Certification, ensuring safe end-to-end charging.

A new aspect added to the Mate 10 series is PC mode, allowing users to connect their phone to PC sans dock.

The Huawei Mate10 Pro is the first non-Google device to ship with Android Oreo.

Likun Zhao, general manager of Huawei Consumer Business Group South Africa says the Huawei Mate 10 Pro and the Porsche Design Mate 10 will cater for the South African consumers’ needs as the technology enters the age of AI.

“The Huawei Mate 10 Series introduces the first mobile AI-specific Neural Network Processing Unit (NPU), launching a new era of intelligent smartphones. We believe these are the best phones to meet the mobile needs of tech-savvy South African consumers.”

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro will be available in Titanium Grey and Mocha Brown and retail for R18,999 and Porsche Design Huawei Mate 10 for R26,999.

The devices will also be available from MTN, Telkom, Vodacom and Cell C stores, while the Porsche Design Huawei Mate 10 is exclusively available from MTN and Telkom.
