Johannesburg Mayor Geoff Makhubo says the former mayor of the city of Johannesburg Herman Mashaba allowed the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to illegally occupy land in Lenasia, Lenasia South and surrounds because he needed the party in order to stay in power.
Makhubo together with Gauteng’s Cooperative Governance MEC Lebogang Maile, infrastructure Development MEC Tasneem Motara and Community safety MEC Faith Mazibuko were addressing Lenasia residents on Monday on the recent land grabs in the area.
Makhubo says the city is not evicting residents but preventing the illegal occupation of land.
The mayor says he understands that Lenasia and Lenasia South is surrounded by informal settlements and that residents including those of other areas like Eldorado Park, Ennerdale and Zakariyya Park are under pressure to pay for services for the land occupied by land grabbers.
Mkahubo says Mashaba is to blame for the current land situation in Lenasia, Lenasia South and surrounds.
“If you want me to be clear, for Mashaba to stay in power he needed the EFF and the EFF occupied land and he allowed it to happen because it was his currency to stay in power which is why then there is such anarchy and then now he’s not taking responsibility because he ran away.”
MEC Maile told Radio Islam the days of land cartels and criminals selling illegal land is numbered.
“We are unleashing a team of patrollers, one thousand five hundred in the whole province that are going to work with the police and other law enforcement agencies to prevent land invasion.”
Maile has urged the community to alert the city of any illegal land occupation so that they can react proactively and prevent it from happening.
