As the holiday season sets in, Business Insider journalist Luke Daniel says the 2020 festive season road safety campaign is a continuation of last year’s initiative, which yielded good results.
Transport minister Fikile Mbalula on Tuesday explained to parliament that this year’s Festive Season Road Safety Campaign would be underpinned by cooperation between all spheres of law enforcement.
The 365-Days Action Agenda, launched by President Cyril Ramaphosa in 2019, has pooled both local and national resources together in an attempt to remove reckless drivers from the country’s roads in the lead-up to the busy festive season.
Daniel says government and transport department is intensifying their approach to reduce the carnage on the country’s roads.
“Part of the 24-hours a day, seven days a week operation is the department’s recognition that a lot of accidents happen during the night and that’s a result of driver fatigue. So, if you are driving at night during the festive season, you can expect to be stopped either at a roadblock or as part of a random stop and search operation.”
Daniel says there will also be much more roadblocks this year compared to previous years.
“In 2019, we had almost two thousand road blocks compared to just seven hundred the year before. It’s highly likely we’ll breach the two thousand mark especially with the COVID pandemic and law enforcement vowing to crack down on public transport potentially becoming a super spreader.
Daniel says Mbalula has indicated that motorists who leave Gauteng may be subjected to COVID-19 symptomatic testing upon return to the province from their holiday destinations.
