Gauteng Premier David Makhura says South Africa is a beautiful country where people of all races can practice their faith without fear or favour.
Makhura attended the annual Ijtima at Mias Farm in Midrand on Friday.
The Ijtima which takes months of planning and preparation is taking place at Mias Farm in Midrand and Escourt in KZN from 19 April to 22 April.
Among one of the largest gatherings of Muslims in South Africa annually, the objective of the Ijtima is to inspire Muslims to go out in the path of God and to sacrifice their time and wealth for the Supreme Being.
Makhura says South Africa is one of the most diverse countries in the world.
“We live in a country that embraces all. Whether you are Jew, you are Muslim, you are Hindu, you are Christian, in South Africa we live side by side and we pray side by side without fear that there may be others who may be killed because of their religion.”
Makhura says he was deeply impacted by the Ijtima.
“The Ijtima was a huge experience for me. I haven’t been to Makkah where the numbers are incomparably huge, but seeing more then thirty thousand men of Muslim faith who essentially are there because of self-renewal and the simplicity of it.”
Deputy Minister of Basic Education Enver Surty, MEC for Roads and Transport Ismail Vadi and Social Cohesion Activist Yusuf Abramjee also attended the annual gathering of Muslims.
