A former Guantanamo Bay detainee has told Radio Islam peace has finally returned to Afghanistan after twenty years of occupation.

Mansoor Adayfi who spent nearly 15 years in Guantanamo Bay and is currently The Guantanamo Project Coordinator for CAGE was speaking to Radio Islam live from Serbia on Tuesday.

Since his release from Gitmo, Adayfi has been advocating for its closure and for an end to the hostility that gave birth to Guantanamo.

Adayfi says he is very happy that the war has ended in Afghanistan.

He says the Taliban have just taken back what belonged to them in the first place.

“Alhamdulillah now we can see peace in Afghanistan and what I can see here is that Taliban took back what has been taken from them for the last twenty years. I remember in Guantanamo I met one of the Taliban leaders and I remember his words. He told me ‘Wallahi, it’s just a matter of time, we have no doubt we will win, it’s just a matter of time.”

Adayfi says people are very quick to play judge, jury, and executioner when it comes to the Taliban.

“They forgot that the very first spark that led to the founding of the Taliban was when the warlords were kidnapping women and kids and raping them. The world is lecturing us or lecturing parliament. I want to ask these people, where were they when women were abused and raped.”

Adayfi says the US cannot declare the war in Afghanistan over until they close Guantanamo Bay.

“They know it is both morally right and in the best interest of American safety and security. I hope that Biden will close Guantanamo as he pulled the forces from Afghanistan, it was a wise and smart decision.”

Adayfi says he always believed peace can be achieved through dialogue and that justice can only happen if perpetrators are accounted.
