With the Democratic Alliance (DA) expected to win the Western Cape, the African National Congress (ANC) head of elections Fikile Mbalula says the party is not disappointed they didn’t win the province.
Mbalula was speaking to Radio Islam at the Tshwane results operation centre (ROC) on Thursday.
During campaigning in the province, ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa reminded Mitchell’s Plain residents the Western Cape is part and parcel of South Africa.
Ramaphosa said people are fed-up with the DA in the Western Cape and urged supporters to come out in great numbers to go and vote the DA out of office.
Mbalula says the ANC knew the DA is strong in the Western Cape and beating them would’ve been a challenge.
“We took them on hard and we went in their spaces and they ran back to the Western Cape. We honestly took them on, we wanted to bring them below 50%. We couldn’t, we should be in the position in the future, but we accept the result and the defeat.”
Mbalula says the ANC worked very hard in Gauteng and is confident the party will retain the government of the province.
