The Associate Editor at the Daily Maverick Ferial Haffajee says through twenty six years of freedom there have been more than twenty five mega African National Congress (ANC) scandals that have rocked the country.
Haffajjee has written a scathing article in which she provides a chart of historical ANC scandals, which makes a mockery of the ANC’s statement of their embarrassment and shame at the exposés of Covidpreneurs
Speaking to Radio Islam, Haffajee says the ANC and the criminal justice system failed to secure full accountability in 24 of 25 mega scandals.
“When I’ve run it before, people say of course there’s a lot more. But these are the really big ones, billions of rands stolen or wasted. What I found when I applied the eye of justice over it, is that in only one of those cases has there been what you could call substantive justice where the former and late national police commissioner Jackie Selebi along with his co-conspirator Glen Agliotti when to jail.”
Haffajee says the ANC always absolves itself of taking responsibility for corrupt officials by saying the law needs to takes it course.
“That was the approach the party used when it returned two of its office bearers who were highly implicated in the looting of the VBS Bank, that’s Florence Radzilani and Daniel Msiza. So on the one hand you saying the law must take its course, but on the other hand you bastardizing the instruments of that law, the criminal justice system, and I hope that it going to change now.”
Haffajee says it’s not great to “sit in a pool of hopelessness” and its important to keep hope alive that civil society will keep the pressure on and not rely solely on President Cyril Ramaphosa to root out corruption from the ANC and the country.
