The Federation of Governing Bodies of South African Schools (FEDSAS) says it’s not convinced that all safety measures will be in place when schools reopen on 1 June.
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced on Tuesday that schools will reopen on 1 June for Grade 7 and 12.
Schools in the country closed more than two months ago in a bid to curb the spread of COVID-19.
Motshekga has given assurances that all measures have been put in place to ensure the safety of all pupils, teachers and other staff.
But Fedsas Paul Colditz says he’s not confident all measures will be in place.
“We are not convinced that all the provinces will be a in position to implement those plans and execute those plans before the end of May and even before the teachers arrive and should arrive on the 25th of May.”
Colditz says they understand that parents may be apprehensive in sending their children to school on 1 June.
“We believe that parents are at this stage and even after last night, I am sure as to what exactly the medical people are saying what exactly the risks are for their children and we may see the parents not sending their children to school for fear of the unknown.”
Colditz says they’ll encourage their members to make sure that all the necessary safety measures are in place and the security and wellbeing on the school premises as far humanly possible is guaranteed.
