The legal advisor for Major Fatima Isaacs who has been charged for “disobeying a lawful command” after she refused to remove her hijab says while they have a strong case against the SANDF she is very proud of Fatima for standing up for her rights.

Isaacs appeared before the Court of Military Justice at the Castle of Good Hope on Wednesday to receive the official charges against her.

A medical technologist at 2 Military Hospital in Wynberg who has served the SANDF for 10 years, Isaacs was supported by her family and legal team.

Speaking to Radio Islam, labour law specialist, Nazeema Mohamed says while Isaacs faces dismissal for “disobeying a lawful command” she has stood up for her rights as a Muslim.

“She is so proud to rise up and step forward given how other men and women have been worked out of the military precisely because of Islamophobia, precisely because of discrimination, harassment and victimization.”

Mohamed says while Isaacs has a good support base, there are those against her.

“She’s got people openly supporting her. She’s got people privately supporting her and of course there’s always been that group, male and female who mock her and question her about why she wears the hijab.”

The matter against Isaacs is expected to continue on the 7th of August at the Castle of Good Hope.
