The father of a 10-year-old boy who died after undergoing a laparoscopic procedure says he and his wife and the entire family are shattered and struggling to come to terms with his death.

Zayyaan Sayed passed away at Netcare Park Lane Clinic earlier this month.

Zayyaan’s lung collapsed shortly after the surgery and he was then taken to the intensive care unit, but died a short while later.

Sayed’s death has stirred controversy around paediatric surgeon Dr Peter Beale and anaesthetist Dr Abdulhay Munshi.

Both doctors have since been suspended from practicing at Netcare facilities pending an independent investigation.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Zayyaan’s father Mohammed says they are still trying to come to terms with Zayaan’s death.

“In the morning Zayyaan was running around, walking, talking, beautiful lad, apple of my eye, like you said he was my pride and joy. That same night he was gone and till today I am still in shock, I go to his qabr every second or third day, but every time I go there, it’s almost surreal it’s almost like all a dream.”

Zayaan’s grandmother Shamshad Sayed says the family had a strange and uneasy feeling about the procedure.

“Allah knows best, it was meant to happen. I think it was written as Mufti Menk said: ‘that is was written for him.’ Mohammad used to have dreams about Zayyaan’s janaza going and he used to cry to Allah ‘don’t test me with this.’ Mufti Menk said something very pertinent and he said: ‘he was meant to live maybe six years, but your duas made him carry till ten years (sic). So thank Allah for that also.’”

Both Netcare and Mediclinic declined to comment about the matter.
