Two people have died after the derogatory Facebook post on Tuesday about Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) sparked riots in India’s IT hub Bangalore that saw clashes between police and thousands of protesters.
At least 60 officers were injured the previous evening as a furious crowd attacked a police station, set vehicles on fire and burnt down the house of a local lawmaker R Akhanda Srinivasa Murthy whose nephew was allegedly responsible for the social media post.
Police opened fire with live ammunition and tear-gassed the violent crowds – Three people were critically wounded during Tuesday’s violence and at least one reporter was injured.
Speaking to Radio Islam, Shaik Zakeer Hussain says the post about Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) by the the lawmakers nephew known as Navin was extremely offensive
“He posted a something against the Prophet (SAW) and Aisha (RA) in relation to their marriage. The post is derogatory in nature and quite offensive. As a Muslim I don’t feeling speaking about it as well.”
Hussain says that while Srinivasa Murthy has distanced himself from his nephew Navin, he is know for his secular image.
He says the people were more enraged about how a family member of someone they voted in power could make such derogatory statements against Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
“He made a video statement a couple of hours later and from what we seen he was quite shaken by what had happened. His statement is that he has nothing to do with the post, he condemned the post. He said that he has not had any relationship with his nephew for the past few years, they shared different ideologies. He asked people to maintain calm and also said that his nephew if has done what he has done, he will be brought to justice.”
Hussain says several Ulama including Mufti PM Muzammil of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind appealed for calm, saying that police had taken action against the provocateur.
