Former deputy education minister Enver Surtee says marhoom Dr. Rashid Ahmed Mahmood (Ram) Saloojee served as an inspiration for many people and communities across South Africa.

Dr Saloojee, a well-known political and community activist, humanitarian and freedom fighter passed away on Wednesday.

He fought selflessly against the apartheid regimes and advocated for freedom and justice in South Africa suffering persecution at the hands of the then Apartheid government.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Surtee says South Africa is a poorer place without Dr Saloojee.

“He was very principled in terms of his stand against the Tricameral system, the creation of a non-racial society, hardworking, very committed. So, he epitomised a person of extraordinary talent who was willing to sacrifice everything. He was a professional medical doctor, was not required to be in politics and had comfortable living. But he served without any reservation the country.”

Surtee says Dr Saloojee had a huge influence on him.

“He was a mentor and great inspiration to me and I’ve conveyed that to him. Quite categorically to say him, Dr. Jassat, Issu Chiba, they were different, they gave up themselves very fully. Ahmed Kathrada, a legend in his own right. So these extraordinary people served the country, the community extremely well and certainly we owe a great debt to them.”

May Allah SWT grant Dr Saloojee the highest abode in Jannah, Ameen.
