The South African Medical Association (SAMA) has condemned the murder of specialist anaesthetist Dr Abdulhay Munshi, describing the heinous crime as outrageous and deplorable.

It is believed that Munshi was shot six times in Orange Grove on Wednesday after he stopped to check his car, which had been rammed at the back by a motorist.

Dr Munshi was a co-accused in a culpable homicide case, along with Dr Peter Beale over the death of a 10-year-old boy.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Sama’s Dr Angelique Coetzee says the murder of Dr Munshi may have been an alleged targeted assassination.

“This is very, very difficult. But if you look at the facts, both the two specialists did receive death warnings, but they never took it seriously in this way that someone will really come and kill you. So at this moment in time, the orthopaedic paediatrician is also in hiding.”

Dr Coetzee says the circumstances surrounding the murder of Dr Munshi may also be allegedly linked to the culpable homicide case he was facing.

“It looks like that. Unfortunately Sama didn’t have all the evidence, there’s still police investigations going on. But we know that the autopsy report that came out indicated that neither he nor the orthopaedic surgeon was responsible for the death of the ten-year-old child. Please don’t get us wrong, we are not accusing the family or any of those. There is a lot of people out there that follow cases and then want justice.”

Dr Coetzee has called on all doctors and medical professionals to wear black armbands for the next week to show solidarity that doctors, healthcare workers and all lives matter.
