Gauteng Premier David Makhura says the province is in the middle of the third wave of the Coronavirus and has urged residents to strictly comply with COVID-19 protocols.

Makhura gave an update on Friday on the province’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gauteng is currently the number one Coronavirus hotspot in South Africa.

The province has recorded more than 465,000 infections and over 11,000 deaths.

Makhura says there is no evidence of better compliance from residents on the COVID-19 protocols.

“These messages are not getting out there that the pandemic is everywhere. We are not picking up the reports of infections including family level infections. Those reports are coming from almost every part of the province. It is winter, we are very concerned it is winter and it is cold. It’s worse when there is inadequate supply of power and electricity.”

Makhura says water cuts have also been a matter of great concern in the province and hurting the response to COVID-19.

“The water cuts have impacted on our fight against COVID. The water cuts have not only been experienced by our healthcare facilities but also the communities in Johannesburg.”

Makhura has thanked NGO Gift of the Givers for the substantial relief to the Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital in Johannesburg and also drilling a borehole to assist with the water shortages experienced by the healthcare facility.
