An attorney representing the family of a patient who died at a Durban hospital because of alleged medical negligence say the family have been robbed of a loved one and a breadwinner.

The King Dinuzulu Hospital is facing a R4-million damages claim after Happy Jabulile Nxumalo was allegedly prematurely discharged from the facility in August while also suffering from what has been called horrendous bedsores.

Her unemployed daughter, Mbali, took Happy home allegedly without the medication that had been prescribed for her ailments.

Her condition took a turn for the worse and she died the next day after waiting for an ambulance that never arrived.

Bisetty Attorney’s Krisendra Bisetty says the family are never received quality healthcare from the hospital.

“My client say she was horrified to see the conditions under which her mother was treated at King Dinuzulu including like seeing faeces on the bed curtain over the period of three days. Her mother, who was obviously seriously ill and unable to move, has complained to her that the nursing staff were not turning here every two hours to prevent the bed sores.”

He says letters of demand has been sent to the hospital and the MEC for health in KZN giving them thirty days to respond, failing which a summons would be issued.

Bisetty says the story broke he has been inundated with similar cases of alleged medical negligence at various other hospital.
