The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) shadow minister of police says Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has been repeatedly permitted to “spew his vows, hatred and violent rhetoric” and police minister Bheki Cele is not doing enough to stop him.

Civil rights group AfriForum has filed a criminal charge against Malema following what they deemed a direct threat to police officers.

Malema told his supporters at a rally over the past weekend, that they should fight police officers, even in their homes.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Andrew Whitfield says it seems that everyone is terrified of Malema.

“Various organisations and individuals including myself have laid charges against Mr. Malema for various incidents of incitement. But the criminals justice system seems reluctant to tackle him head-on. In this case, Minister Cele has a vested interest in laying a charge against Malema because it’s his responsibility to stand up for his police officers.”

Whitfield says Malema must be stopped.

“I fear that given the track record of the EFF, unless he is put to a stop, that there may be some very serious consequences and his words may be converted into very serious action.”

Whitfield says Malema is the product of the ANC, adding that he will not be surprised that if one day he becomes the leader of the ruling party.

“There can only be one reason why the ANC government has been reluctant to take such decisive action against Mr. Malema is because they are scared of him, because he may have information about people in the ANC.”

In September, former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela while speaking to Radio Islam expressed concerns about what would happen to South Africa if Malema and the EFF were to come into power and rule the country.
