The Johannesburg mayoral position is up for grabs and is set to be a highly contested race as the ANC, DA and EFF are in contention for the position.
The DA may lose the mayoral position in the City of Johannesburg if they put their faith in the support of the EFF.
Party leader Julius Malema hinted at a media briefing ahead of the EFF elective conference to be held at Nasrec in December, that the party will only consider voting with the official opposition if it supports an EFF mayoral candidate.
He is reported to have said, “We supported the DA and it’s their turn now to support the EFF”
Malema also refuted claims that he was blocking the creation of the party’s lower structures and leagues in order to maintain his control of the party.
Hermann Mashaba will vacate the office on November 27th after he resigned following the election of Helen Zille as the DA’s federal council chairperson.
Speaking to Radio Islam, Political analyst and North West University professor, Andre Duvenhage says the EFF plays a big role in deciding the next Johannesburg Mayor.
“For the DA to put a candidate, they need the support from the EFF and for the ANC to put a candidate, they also need to get the support of the EFF.”
Duvenhage says the EFF will take advantage of this situation and present a candidate of their own.
