Cyril Ramaphosa has been elected the new President of the Republic of South Africa.
Ramaphosa was nominated as a candidate by ANC backbencher Patrick Maesela, and the nomination was seconded by his colleague Joan Fubbs.
None of the opposition parties nominated a presidential candidate.
Ramaphosa is the fifth president of the country after Jacob Zuma announced his resignation on Wednesday night.
He was congratulated by Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng who presided over the election.
“Only one candidate has been nominated. The nomination is in order. Accordingly, in terms of item 5 of part A of Schedule 3 to the Constitution, I declare the honourable Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa, the duly elected president of the Republic of South Africa.”
Ramaphosa thanked all political parties for the support and vowed work together with them to unite the people of South Africa.
He says South Africa must come first in everything that elected officials do.
“I will do all this as a servant of our people because I do believe when one is elected in this type of position you basically become a servant of the people of South Africa and I will seek to execute that task with humility with faithfullness and with dignity as well.”
Ramaphosa says it will be wonderful if the level of debates in parliament can be raised to a level where where parties really begin to engage on national issues without members of parliament (MP’s) screaming at each other.
