Former Gauteng Roads and Transport MEC Ismail Vadi says while there is a certain degree of political uncertainty in South Africa, the Muslim community is becoming more and more divided.
Vadi was speaking during Unity and Friendship Dinner at the Nizamiye Masjid at the weekend.
The event brought together the Muslim ummah from different ethnic backgrounds to promote brotherhood, mutual understanding, respect and unity.
Vadi says there is must be a collective effort to unite the ummah.
“We need to have a more united and collective collaborative action of the ummah as a whole. Whether it is nationally in this country or even globally we have to begin to re-inculcate the spirit of a global ummah that can focus on some of the broader and common challenges that are facing us.”
Deputy Minister of Basic Education Enver Surty says unity forms the basis of South Africa’s democracy.
He says Nabi Muhammad (saw) set a perfect example for unity.
“The holy Prophet (SAW) said ‘that our commitment to our faith in Allah depends again on our love for humanity and that’s what’s important that we recognize the important element that is not only about our ummah’s reflection, but it’s also about our outward expression and unity and friendship with others.”
Former deputy international relations minister Ebrahim Ebrahim who also attended the dinner echoed Vadi and Surty’s comments emphasizing that Muslims also played an important role in defeating apartheid and uniting South Africa.
