City Parks has urged South Africans to heed to the rules and regulations when exercising in parks and attending funerals.
President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday announced that while the country would remain under Alert Level 3 lockdown, parks would open for physical exercise.
City Parks and Zoo says in line with Ramaphosa’s announcement, it will ensure that parks are opened to allow residents to keep fit and healthy, by exercising in close proximity to their homes.
Speaking to Radio Islam, City Parks Jenny Moodley says people must respect the rules & regulations when going to a park.
“We are urging people to exercise common sense. Unfortunately, we are not going to have enforcement officers on all the sites. There won’t be sanitizer when you enter the facility. You enter the park at your own risk and of course we are urging again that you comply with all the regulations.”
President Cyril Ramaphosa also said it was disappointing that many people attended funerals with more than 1,000 people.
Moodley says people are not abiding by the COVID-19 regulations when attending funerals.
“We are finding in many instances that gatherings that were restricted to fifty mourners, in some instances we’ve had busloads of people, so thankfully we had JMPD in place so when people enter a cemetery it can be closely monitored. Very often we found that huge tents are being put up, marquees and there are gatherings at funerals of over 50 people.”
Meanwhile Moodley says the city of Joburg has the capacity of over a million burial sites, but it does not mean the city has dug more than a million graves.
Moodley has also urged families to consider alternative burial options including burying more than one person in a grave.
