The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) in partnership with more than 40 U.S. and international groups are planning a global boycott of Hilton Worldwide over that corporation’s refusal to end an agreement to license the construction of a Hampton Hotel on the site of a bulldozed masjid in the Uyghur region of China.
Cair held a news conference outside The Capital Hilton in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday where they made the announcement.
During the presser, the organisation also announced the launch of a new web portal designed to monitor and combat global Islamophobia.
Speaking to Radio Islam during the America Report, Cair’s Ibrahim Hooper says Hilton Worldwide has ignored calls to end its licence and agreement to build a hotel where a masjid once stood.
“We really don’t have any choice. It’s a moral obligation and Hilton may think and be weighing that they make more money from China than they might lose in a boycott, but this isn’t going away. For us this is a moral imperative and we will continue it regardless of what happens.”
Hooper has encouraged Muslims to support the call for the boycott.
“I would encourage any Muslim organisations or any organisations in South Africa, if they want to co-sponsor this boycott campaign, they should e-mail me directly and we’ll consider having them join this international campaign.”
Hooper also touched on news about US President Joe Biden urged to fulfil campaign pledges of no more blank cheques for Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi; Cair Minnesota joining community leaders to address the sentencing of the Dar al-Farooq bomber; the anniversary of the US terror attacks and a congressional letter by Muslim and Jewish groups urging the US Federal Government to make Halaal and Kosher meat available in emergency food programmes.
