As the country marked the 16 days of activism against gender based violence, Radio Islam hosted a panel discussion to create awareness about the rise in the abuse of women and children in the country.
Guests included attorney Yousha Tayob, Jamiatul Ulama South Africa’s Moulana Ebrahim Bham and social workers Anisa Moosa and Shuhaida Adam.
The panel discussed a number of pertinent issues related to gender based violence including the rise in abuse of women in marriages, in workplaces, the abuse of children, the stigma of the abused victim in society and not reporting abuse.
Ml Bham says while the stats of women being abused in marriages is frightening, Islam has no tolerance for the ill treatment of women.
“In our Muslim community, if it’s a fraction at that particular type of stats, one is one too many. The whole aspects of Islam has always been with regards to kindness, compassion being the overriding factor in all types of relationships including marital relationship.”
Ml Bham says there must be repercussions for abusers.
“Our beloved Nabi (saw) said ‘what type of man are you that you would beat your wife during the course of the day and then hope to fufill your desires with her at the end of the day.’ Whats gone wrong with people that they would do something like that?”
The panellists all agreed that communication is an important aspect in highlighting abuse including standing up against all forms of violence against women and children.
