As Black Friday looms, Gauteng’s Office of Consumer Affairs have warned consumers to be financially savvy on the day of frenzied shopping sprees.

Black Friday, a day of massive sales that originated in the US, has become a mega shopping phenomenon in South Africa over the past years.

Consumers go online to retail websites and que at shopping centres from the early hours of the morning across the country for perceived bargains.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Gauteng’s Office of Consumer Affairs Milly Viljoen says people should have a plan before they shop on Black Friday.

“You have your plan on exactly what you need. What your needs are I think that’s also critical. Your wants and your needs, once you draw that critical line between a want and a need and you’ve attached a budget to your wants as well as your needs, than you’ll be able to start seeing where are you financially.”

Vijoen says people are susceptible to overbuying which is one of the main issues consumers face on Black Friday.
