Palestine advocacy group BDS South Africa says it is hoping that all South Africans and communities will join their campaign to boycott Clover and all its products.
This comes after the Competition Tribunal gave the go-ahead to a takeover by Milco SA of South Africa’s biggest dairy company.
The consortium, led by Israel’s Central Bottling Company (CBC) – the biggest shareholder in Milco – made the offer to buy out Clover at cost of R 4.8 billion in February 2019.
Other investors included Brimstone Investment, which in April pulled out following a protest by pro-Palestinian activist groups.
Speaking to Radio Islam, BDS’ Muhammed Desai says if the takeover proceeds, they will launch “a militant but peaceful campaign”, including protests and disruptions against Clover and a boycott of all its products.
“With public support, we will be able to drive this Israeli company out of South Africa. This is also a campaign in which is affects many of us at a very direct level in our houses, we have various Clover products. But there are various alternatives that we can seek, alternatives that comes from our own community in fact.”
Desai says while Milco is taking over Clover, BDS wants to drive them out.
“We want them to realize that it’s a bad decision to be in South Africa, because the South African public doesn’t want to support a company that send its profits to Israeli army structures and to Israeli settlements companies.”
Desai says BDS wants Clover to be sold back to South African shareholders.
