An Australian citizen says record rains and widespread flooding have prompted evacuations along Australia’s east coast and filled Sydney’s main reservoir to overflowing for the first time in 30 years.
Hoosein Ismail was speaking to Radio Islam on Sunday about authorities warnings of the potentially “life-threatening” flash floods that has affected the country.
Torrential rains have pummeled a vast coastal region already soaked by an unusually wet summer.
Ismail says the flooding has affected many people who have flocked to evacuation centres in areas north of Sydney in New South Wales state.
“Officials have put an alert out for dangerous flooding after the city’s main dams spilled over on Saturday with severe storms across New South Wales which has now triggered a mini tornado, evacuation and at the same time hampering the Coronavirus vaccine delivery.”
Ismail says officials are on high alert to keep Australians safe.
“Officials are assessing the current rainfalls in New South Wales and also looking at severed weather changes in Australia. You remember we had severe fires over 2019 which destroyed thousands and thousands of acres of land as well literally millions of animals that were wiped out.”
Ismail says Australians across the country have opened their hearts to assist those that have been affected by the disaster.
The Bureau of Meteorology reported flooding levels surpassing record 2013 floods along the Hastings River outside Port Macquarie, about 400 kilometres north of Sydney.
