Radio Islam’s Asia Pacific correspondent Kiru Naidu says the situation in Hong Kong is very tense as the country intends using legal means to tackle protests.

Hong Kong’s leader Carrie Lam has vowed to tackle the ongoing protests by legal means, adding that police will not respond to violence with more of their own.

Lam also admitted the crux of the political stalemate lay with the government’s refusal to meet protesters’ demands.
Naidu says the emergency regulations were last used fifty years ago.

“It’s a response to widespread protests that has been mounting in Hong Kong for several months now. Carrie Lam is certainly taking measures that are going to make a lot of people very upset and this is certainly coming to a head now.”

The protests, which started to oppose a now-withdrawn extradition bill and drew more than a million onto the streets, have grown into a pro-democracy movement against what is seen as China’s increasing grip on the city since it reverted to Chinese control in 1997.

Naidoo also spoke about the US restricting visas to Chinese officials until Beijing ends the repression of Uighurs and the swine flu breakout in North Korea.
