The chairperson of the National Healthcare Professionals Association (NHCPA) says their evidence submitted to the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) proves that Indian and Black doctors are allegedly being discriminated against by medical aid schemes, based purely on the colour of their scheme.
The NHCPA alleged these doctors struggle to receive payment from medical aid schemes and that they are being exploited and harassed by them.
Reports indicate Discovery, Medscheme and GEMS made submissions at a hearing with the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) to determine whether there was racial profiling and if this constituted a violation of the Bill of Rights.
Speaking to Radio Islam, the NHCPA’s Dr Donald Gumede says they have the numbers to back up their claims that Indian and Black doctors are allegedly being discriminated against.
“This is a traumatic event because other doctors have lost everything or healthcare professionals lost everything because of these medical aids, a lot, not just a few.”
The CEO of Discovery Medical Aid Dr. Jonathan Broomberg also speaking to Radio Islam says there is no truth to allegations of racial profiling against Indian and black doctors.
“Dr. Gumede has been talking about this for weeks now on all kinds of outlets. He has yet to provide a shred of evidence that that is true and we can provide extensive evidence and we’ve submitted this to the council and we’ll submit it to anyone that there is absolutely no racial component.”
The SAHRC’s Provincial Manager, Buang Jones says the commission would consider the submissions before determining the next step.
